What to Expect at Your Appointment

Our goal is to offer you comprehensive veterinary medical care while providing instruction for our veterinary students, interns, and residents. Although the time you spend with us might be a bit longer than visiting a regular veterinary hospital, your pet will be seen by a veterinary team with a great amount of collective knowledge and expertise. Please allow one to two hours for your initial appointment.

Most ophthalmology patients can expect the following at their appointment:

1. You will be greeted by a fourth-year veterinary student who will bring you back to an exam room.
2. The student will perform a brief physical and ocular exam.
3. The student will then leave the exam room to present the case to the resident or faculty veterinarian who will be caring for your animal.
4. The student and veterinarian will then return to the exam room, where the veterinarian will perform a second examiniation and explain to you the diagnosis, treatment options, or, if necessary, further diagnostics that should be completed. At this time we also will discuss all associated costs with you.
5. We will work with you to make decisions about the care of your animal, and schedule or perform any diagnostics or treatments that are decided upon.
6. Note: If we suspect your animal may need surgery at the time you make your appointment, we try our best to schedule your presurgical appointment the day before your pet's surgery.
7. The day of your pet's surgery, you will be periodically called with updates about your pet's condition.
8. Upon discharge, you will be provided with oral and written discharge instructions, medication information, and any at-home care instructions.
9. Depending on the diagnosis, we may have you schedule a follow-up appointment, you may receive a follow-up call from us, or we may ask you to call in with a progress report about your pet's condition.
