Zoological Medicine

What is Zoological Medicine?

Our Zoological Medicine service provides medical and surgical care to exotic animals, including privately owned exotic pets, animals in public zoological parks and aquariums, and limited types of wildlife.

Animals we commonly treat include rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas, sugar gliders, rodents, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, spiders, and scorpions.

We are fully integrated into the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, which means we have access to all of the state-of-the-art equipment and expertise in all of our specialty areas, such as Anesthesia and Pain Management and Diagnostic Imaging. This allows us to provide comprehensive care for your animal.

Does My Pet Need an Appointment?

With exotic pets, it sometimes can be difficult to recognize health issues before they become serious. The following are some common signs to look for in exotic pets that merit a visit to the hospital:

  • Anorexia: loss of or decrease in appetite
  • Lethargy: not as active as usual
  • Weight loss
  • Respiratory distress: labored or difficulty breathing
  • Abdominal enlargement: swelling of the belly
  • Ataxia: stumbling or having difficulty in moving normally
  • Bleeding
  • Seizures
  • Abnormal posture
  • Unusual swellings or masses
  • Injury of any kind
  • Regurgitation or vomiting
  • Hair, feather, or scale loss

How Much Does it Cost?

Every case is unique and the cost of your animal's treatment will vary depending on the type and severity of the disease, the diagnostic tests, and the treatment plan.

Your veterinarian will talk to you about your options, the costs involved, and provide you a fee estimate at your appointment.

Visit the hospital's Financial Information page for general payment information.
